Originally built in 1913, this Waukesha County schoolhouse was completely transformed in 2019 from a historic educational building into a vibrant mid-century modern hub for offices and community gatherings. The remodel created functional, stylish spaces for three local businesses while honoring the building’s original character.

FULL BUILDING RENOVATION

The schoolhouse was reimagined while preserving key historic elements:

  • Removed old plaster walls to reveal the original exterior brick
  • Replaced outdated HVAC with a new, energy-efficient system
  • Framed new walls, reworked flooring and added updated trim, moldings and finishes
  • Installed custom features throughout the building to enhance functionality and style

MID-CENTURY MODERN FINISHES

To capture a mid-century aesthetic, we collaborated closely with the owners and interior designers, ensuring every detail reflected their vision:

  • Retro electric fireplace as a focal point
  • Custom lighting fixtures, window treatments and wall art
  • Thoughtfully-selected furniture to unify the space
  • Preserved historic elements, including in-set lockers, trophy cases and memorabilia

COMMUNITY & EVENT SPACES

The renovated schoolhouse also serves as a dynamic space for events, recreation and community gatherings:

THE CAFETERIA
A former gym and stage area was reimagined as “The Cafeteria,” a flexible space designed for parties, group events and fun:

  • Lofted area with a slide and additional seating
  • Open rec-room lower level with swings, arcade games and a popcorn maker
  • Rugged polished concrete flooring for high-energy activities and easy cleanup
  • Custom-painted walls, mural, party lighting and a decorative staircase featuring book spines

THE GYM
The full-size gym was fully renovated with modern finishes while maintaining its schoolhouse charm:

  • Basketball courts and wood flooring
  • Open space for recreation, fitness and games

RESULTS

The Old School 1913 project blends historic character with modern design, creating a versatile space for work, play and community connection. From mid-century office spaces to dynamic recreational areas, every detail was thoughtfully planned to make the building a hub for creativity and gathering.
